“CLEVELAND, Ohio – Uno Lady is going places. Literally, and musically. Cleveland’s one-woman choir is the recipient of two new fellowships, one in Akron and the other in France, that are sending her in new musical directions as well as across the globe.
‘Going forward I want to have both visuals and audio, I want to always have video with my music. That’s become very important to me,’ says Uno Lady, whose name is Christa Ebert. In the last decade she has established herself as one of the most unique voices, literally, in town with her high clear vocals that she accompanies with more of her own voice, prerecorded on tapes and played and looped as she performs live.
‘That’s something I’ve been working on with the Akron Soul Train fellowship I was awarded in November. I proposed to take my shows to the next level, invest in a better camera (I was using a GoPro), and start making visuals for my performances. … I want to submerge myself in nature, take videos and field recordings, then let the scenes and sounds write the song. That was the original plan but I bought the camera in November and with the show being 2.5 months later, I figured it was best to create video for my current songbook.’
Ebert will debut the fruits of the her work in Akron with two local shows this month. On Friday, she’ll be performing at the Akron Recording Company, 243 Furnace St., Suite B. from 7 – 10 p.m. She’ll follow this up with a Cleveland show at Gordon Square smART Space on Friday, Feb. 15 from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
The goal of the Akron Soul Train residency program was ‘connecting and empowering the community and artists by granting fellowships that provide resources for all creative disciplines, thereby fostering a more vibrant downtown Akron. Ebert used her stipend to purchase a new camera, a Panasonic Lumix, and other equipment to allow her more visual creativity. ‘I’ve been filming lots of video and taking sound samples I will integrate into my performance,’ she says… ‘Eventually, I want to let the video write the songs and integrate more sound samples.’
Ebert plan to continue in this direction in the French countryside this fall, where she has earned an artist-in-residency at the Chateau d’Orquevaux in the Champagne-Ardenne region.
‘This castle in the French countryside offers artists from all over the world a place with limited distraction and an abundance of natural inspiration. The residency comes a bedroom, a studio, and some meals. I’ll share the castle with a few other artists as well as goats and chickens on the 40 acre estate.’ she says. ‘I plan on writing lyrics, recording videos, and exploring my vocal range in a castle built in the 1700s. The tall ceilings and wine cellars are begging for me to belt in them and be drenched in their reverb …I plan to mash environmental footage with ethereal sounds to create a transportive, meditative effect.’ FULL ARTICLE
